Selective hardening line (hamon) on a custom artisanal knife blade
L’Atelier sous l’éclipse

Where fire meets clay, the hamon line unveils the unseen

The craftsman behind the Atelier : Yann, custom knifemaker in France

My name is Yann. Based in Reyrieux, just north of Lyon in France, my journey didn't start with the clash of an anvil, but in the immaterial world of computer science. Trained in IT, I spent my youth exploring virtual realms before realizing I had a deep need to create something concrete, something tangible.

Everything changed in 2017. Driven by my curiosity and my love for good food (I love to cook, and I love doing it with good tools even more), I found an old coal forge and an anvil. In my small workshop in Trévoux, I began taming the fire to bring my first blades to life. What started as a hobby quickly forged itself into a quest for raw creativity.

"Woof !
Go check the knives gallery, one of them seems to have lost its shine.
But be careful: a beautiful Hamon doesn't reveal itself at first glance, you have to know how to make the steel speak!"

Minimalism & Efficiency

My design is deeply rooted in Japanese knifemaking. I admire the Japanese blacksmiths' ability to wed formidable efficiency with a stripped-down, minimalist aesthetic.

My specialty? Selective quenching on carbon steels (such as C125U, C100, or 26C3). This technique creates the Hamon, a lifeline on the steel, standing as a testament to the perfect balance between hardness and flexibility.

Materials & Balance

The choice of materials is the starting point of every creation. I select rare woods for their history: the depth of ancient bog oak (morta) or the striking contrasts of Amboyna burl.

Each wood is chosen for its grain and density, which I sometimes pair with composites like G10, carbon fiber, or micarta, valued for their unyielding resilience.

Why "Sous l'Éclipse"?

The workshop's name is a tribute to Berserk, the manga created by Kentaro Miura, who sadly passed away on May 6, 2021.

Berserk is a tale of rare intensity and unfathomable depth, chronicling the epic of a mercenary warrior struggling against fate and causality. Tragically unfinished, the story will never see the conclusion it truly deserves.

This intensity and total dedication serve as my compass. It is what I try to breathe into my work: a humble struggle against raw materials to reveal their hidden beauty.
